MODDED LOVE IN GTA 5
Year: 2022
Format: Video, Animation
Duration: 6 min
Being raised in the early 2000s gaming culture with Windows XP PC (a luxury in Ukraine) and video games, I was always interested in the gaming as a leisure activity, which let me explore the cultural, social, economic and political history of the West. The interest towards machinima as a born-digital, adolescent medium (” Understanding Machinima”, Henry Lowood, ed. by Jenna Ng) came from embedded aesthetics in my childhood and curiosity of repurposing the game world.
“Machinima is a philosophy, a fervent belief, a technique,
and, last of all, a technology” (Hugh Hancock and Johnny Ingram, 2007).
Machinima is a form of DIY media (Henry Jenkins, 2011). By being both a player and an artist, I could mod the Rockstar Game environments, using it as a tool for creating a narrative and exploit technologies worked out of games to produce all kinds of game-based media artefacts. Lowood calls it “high-performance play”, where one’s combines technical mastery, high-level play and performance. By discovering or creating assets found in a game or virtual world, involving by processes of extraction, capture, modification, composting, editing, and encoding that result in creation of a new media object. This commissioned project for Marco & Simon’s wedding in French valleys tells the story of love by hacking and modifying a pre-existing narrative within the video game GTA V.
